Katya Apekisheva — Piano Recital

Tuesday 23 September

This promises to be a very special evening.

In preparation for her forthcoming Wigmore Hall recital, the extraordinary pianist Katya Apekisheva will perform her programme here at Highgate Sessions, including Alban Berg’s intense and expressive Sonata No. 1 and Schubert’s sublime final piano sonata, the Sonata in B-flat major, D960.

Described by Gramophone as a “profoundly gifted artist”, Katya is one of Europe’s most distinguished and compelling pianists, admired for the depth, intelligence and emotional power of her playing.

Born in Moscow into a family of musicians, she studied at the Gnessin Music School for exceptionally gifted children and made her stage debut at the age of twelve. She went on to become a prizewinner at the Leeds International Piano Competition and has since performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic, Philharmonia, Hallé, Moscow Philharmonic, Jerusalem Symphony, English Chamber Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. She has worked with conductors including Sir Simon Rattle, David Shallon, Jan Latham-Koenig and Alexander Lazarev.

Katya is also a much-valued friend of Highgate Sessions, and it is both a joy and an honour to welcome her back. She has given several unforgettable recitals here over the years, each one seeming more magical than the last, including a concert for Music With Love, my series of live-streamed performances for care homes during lockdown.

Together with Charles Owen, Katya is the co-founder of the London Piano Festival — a superb and adventurous concert series which is well worth exploring.

To hear a pianist of Katya’s calibre at such close quarters, performing this remarkable programme before her Wigmore Hall appearance, will be a rare treat.

Music starts at 7.30pm – you are welcome to join us for a drink when doors open at 6.45pm. Wine, soft drinks are on the house all evening.
